After much outrage, including significant opposition from FIFA (world football’s governing body) and UEFA (the European subsidiary of FIFA), the attempt by 12 football clubs from England, Spain, and Italy to create a new league was spectacularly shut down. Source.
Clubs from the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland, Scandinavia, and Ireland are also attempting to create new football leagues, comprised of the top teams from each nation, with the poorer clubs left behind. UEFA approves. Source. Similarly, clubs from the US, Mexico, and potentially Canada are considering creating a powerful North American league. FIFA approves, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino declaring that this could be “the best league in the world”. Source.
