Continuing our series on the European Super League, much of the opposition to the project stemmed from concerns, as reported by the BBC, that the project “would destroy domestic leagues”. Source.
Unlike the situation with the proposed regional leagues that UEFA and FIFA wholeheartedly endorse, which actually do involve top clubs breaking away from their domestic competitions and leaving their smaller peers behind, the clubs behind the European Super League intended to “remain in their domestic competitions”, as reported by CBS, simply replacing their participation in the UEFA Champions League with participation in their own continental competition.
