Progressives concerned by Biden’s air strike

As reported by NPR, President Biden’s first significant military action, around one month since taking office, an air strike in Syria, has drawn criticism from Democrats and their allies. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders said, “While the President has a responsibility to defend the people of the United States, our Constitution is clear that it is the Congress, not the President, who has the authority to declare war”. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna said, “We cannot stand up for Congressional authorization before military strikes only when there is a Republican President… The Administration should have sought Congressional authorization here. We need to work to extricate from the Middle East, not escalate.” Source.

Politico explains some of the reasoning for the airstrike: “The targets were chosen based on their affiliation with the militia groups officials believed executed the attacks in Iraq… The retaliatory strike comes more than a week after a dozen rockets believed to be linked to an Iran-backed militia group targeted coalition forces outside Irbil International Airport”. Source.
